Project
Overview

My design partner Julian and I are excited to share ‘In Real Life,’ our speculative app collaboration. This conversational coaching app gently nudges users to put down their phones and connect face-to-face with people in their local environment.

In the following posts, we will be exploring how conversational and voice-activated design, custom voices, AI prompts, sound, and animation can be harnessed to turn mobile technology into an antidote to social isolation—and promote healthier real-world interaction.

Discovery research

We conducted two rounds of testing with a custom GPT coach we designed. We were interested in learning whether the coach concept motivates real-life interaction, and exploring if matching the coaching tone to a user’s personality makes it more effective.

Conversational design

We learned that prompting style preference varies by personality-for intance some test participants found a direct authoritative tone most motivating, and some e wanted a more neutral tone from a coach. For that reason we brainstormed ways to create a coach that would learn and adapt to users personality over time. To address this diversity in users, we rapidly iterated a ChatGPT agent prompt and used it in two rounds of qualitative research.
